The Why of it

Photographs allow you to look back and remember a moment in time. They are memories in fact. Photography has always been a part of me. More recently I had been doing short videos, and a bit consummed with a love of doing that. As I endeavored to create better video - I saw the following masterpiece:

Sapna & Vijay

I thought "The equipment they used had to be very expensive". The videographer was kind enough to list the equipment he used in creating his art. I was blown away to discover that the videographer was using DSLR's.

I purchased a semi-pro DSLR forthwith for video purposes. But in testing it out I took a picture of our baby daughter who was at the time just learning to roll over. I showed my wife the picture later that evening and she could not stop looking at it. She loved the photo and she wanted printed copies right away. Seeing this emotional impact made me fall in love with this media all over again. I still do Video but I am a lover of photography.

The Voyeur in you

All photographers are voyeurs at heart? Voyeur is a french word which literally means "one who sees". Photographers are turned on by seeing and interpreting the world as it happens around them and then they go "Click" and the observed is now captured.

A photograph can convey more than what even your eye can detect. It inspires like the dreamer who sees the world not as it is, but as it could be.

Photography is creative and it fits us perfectly because we are creative beings creating. So go be a Romantic, feel the experience of taking the image with a smile, a laugh or a tear - which ever way you are moved. There is beauty in joy and in sorrow, beauty in the profound and the profaine. Try to understand this truth without judgement. Don't just do these things, Be these things and you will be a great photographer and the shots you dream of will find you.

The Observer

Beauty is everywhere and in everything.  It is clearly observable. Quantum physics tells us that nothing that is observed is unaffected by the observer. The Observer cannot be separated from what they Observe.

The insight here is that everyone sees a different truth because everyone is creating what they see. And whether or not you take the picture it will stay with you. because you are a part of it.

Walter: When are you going to take it?

Sean: Sometimes I don't. If I like a moment, for me, personally, I don't like to have the distraction of the camera. I just want to stay in it.

Walter: Stay in it?

Sean: Yeah. Right there. Right here.

Photography is Art. Art is subjective, It is beautiful simply because it is. It needs no explanation because It speaks not to your intellect but to your Soul.

One more thing

Love who you are working with. It is all about people. Some subjects are

extroverts and some introverts. Build trust and have a clear vision. Communicate before you even pick up a camera.

  • Keep it Simple

  • Have a plan (but be spontaneous within that plan)

  • Keep a sense of fun.

Your shoot happens organically.
